Slow Food First Coast announces 2014 Tour de Farm date!

The Slow Food First Coast’s Board of Directors announced the 2014 Tour de Farm launch date to eager members and guests at the Annual Membership meeting held at Mitchells Fish Market last evening, November 18th. The Tour de Farm event is scheduled for April 13th from 12:00 to 5:00 pm.

The Tour de Farm Committee is building on the tremendous success of previous years which now include farms in over seven counties in Northeast Florida.

Farms in St. John’s, Baker, Bradford, Duval, Putnam and Nassau Counties are slated to open their gates to the community for this family-friendly fund-raising event. The Tour de Farm will provide people from the First Coast an opportunity to meet the farmers who produce local food and the chefs and artisans who are committed to using locally-grown ingredients.

The Tour de Farm event draws thousands of visitors including committed members of the organization and the Tour de Farm Committee is prepared for even more for April 13th, 2014!

Slow Food First Coast is honored to have Carmen Franz, who will serve as Committee Chair for the 2014 Tour de Farm event. Ms. Franz serves a full-time position with Florida Organic Growers as a Community Food Project Coordinator.

Tour de Farm provides resources to residents of the First Coast who are eager to connect with many venues and farms for local food.

An increased number of local Snail of Approval celebrated chefs also get involved with the Tour de Farm event offering cooking demonstrations and tastings throughout the afternoon at various farms. New chefs and artisans are sure to be on board for the 2014 Tour de Farm.

Well known restaurants who have participated in this event include St. Augustine-based The Floridian, Gas Full Service Restaurant and Purple Olive, along with Taverna and Orsay from Jacksonville; and Fernandina Beach’s 29 South.

The full Tour de Farm brochure will be available on the Slow Food First Coast website prior to the event.

Copies will also be available at local outlets in your neighborhoods as well. Updates to the event will be posted on the organization’s website and Facebook page as new developments emerge.

Participants in the Tour de Farm can select from a planned tour or design their own route for the afternoon. The brochure will include maps and five suggested loops along with a schedule of events for each loop.

Full farm lunches by some of the restaurants will be available by advance reservation. Details will be released in the Tour de Farm brochure.

Apart from engaging with those responsible for producing local food and taking tours of the farms, participants will be able to purchase fresh produce, meats and locally-produced prepared foods.
